Student Spring Clean Hacks
The start of a new year often makes us want a good clear out and tidy - both mentally and physically! So, if you’ve been meaning to give your student home a good clean-up since returning back from the winter break, then NOW is the perfect time to start!
To make things more enjoyable, and cheaper, here are some fun cleaning hacks from our Beyond Lettings’ team…
Fresh air is free so open your windows for half and hour or so when you are at home to get some air into the room, get rid of some of the dust and let some of the built-up odours out. Just remember to close them again when you go out to keep safe and also to keep the heat conserved inside.
Did you know that you can use a cheap lint roller to get more than just fluff and dust off your clothes? Have a go with your roller on curtains, cushions, lampshades, rugs and blankets and see what a difference it makes! It’s also pretty therapeutic seeing all the fluff fill up on the sticky sheets - you’ve got to admit!
If you don’t want to fork out on expensive cleaning products, then white vinegar is your new best friend. Whether you want to clean your windows, shower or sink, all you need to do is combine vinegar with water and use it to clean your surfaces with a clean cloth. The solution is easy to wipe away and will also kill any lingering smells from spilt late-night snacks and stinky takeaways. Plus, you can also soak your shower head in white vinegar to remove limescale or to get rid of any unnatural smells coming from the toilet!
It’s likely that you spend almost every day typing on your laptop, meaning that your keyboard could get quite gross over time, especially if you eat near it Luckily, all you need to do for this is locate an old toothbrush - make sure it’s dry and use bristles to get in between all these pesky keys. It’s so satisfying seeing all the dirt, dust and crumbs come out from lingering beneath the keys.
Got a drawer full of odd socks that have had their partner mysteriously chomped up at the laundry? Put them to good use as a duster to remove dirt and dust from your student bedroom. A spare sock over your hand (sock puppet style) creates the perfect cleaning mitten to dust cabinets, shelves, skirting boards, and other things that gather dust. Plus, don’t forget the top of your wardrobe every once in a while!.
If you often find that your bedroom floor becomes a ‘floordrobe’ for clothes, towels and accessories, then one of the best ways you can make a change to this is to invest in some over-door hooks. These hanging hooks will help you create storage space at height where there was previously none and will reduce the chances of your bedroom floor looking like the changing room floor at the start of the Zara sale!
If one of your biggest problems is where to put all your dirty clothes and bedding, then the answer comes in finding the right laundry basket. Choose a basket that fits well within the shape and size of your room - you can get tall, thin ones, corner ones and even hanging ones. Choose one that doesn’t take up loads of space but gives you the perfect chance to clear away the clutter of dirty clothes. Finding one with a lid is even better so you don’t have to look at (or smell) the clothes before they go to the laundry!
