Valentine’s day might elicit a few eye rolls, but we think there’s a lot to love about it. Whether you’re celebrating romantic love or some brilliant friendships, use the day to toast the good things in your life.
With some clever tips and a bit of effort you can turn your Leeds student house into a luxurious boudoir for the evening, without having to get involved in all the expensive commerciality (unless you want to – in which case, fill your boots!).
Read on for some ideas for date night fun on a low budget.
A local walk
Student accommodation in Leeds may be fun, sociable, and lots of other good things, but it can be difficult to find some quiet time when you need it. If you want to spend some quality time with your special someone then what about heading outside for a walk? You could plan a route through the city, stopping off at one of the free museums (Leeds City Museum is a good one), have a sit and chat on your favourite bench, then a coffee at the waterfront area before stopping off for a drink in your local. Or if you’re after some more bucolic views then head up into the hills for green fields and vast skies as far as the eye can see. Chevin Forest Park and Meanwood Valley are both great options.
Paint The Kiss
So, this one is a bit on the costly side and it’s a few days after Valentine’s Day, but on February 16, the Northern Monk Refectory is hosting a pop-up painting class, and we are very excited about it. It is based on Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss (think a kissing couple with lots of gold and beautiful details). The class will be led by a professional artist who can give you guidance and advice, and then you can set to work creating your own interpretation of the masterpiece. And when you have finished you and your partner can swap artworks and display them in your student house in Leeds.
A quiet evening
Sometimes it’s the smallest things that mean the most, so if you have someone you want to impress this Valentine’s Day, then tidy your house, put up some fairy lights, pick a great playlist, and share some dinner. It doesn’t have to be fancy food, in fact a cheese toastie with a glass of wine, or fish and chips out of the paper, have all the cosy feels to make a really lovely evening.
Game on
Put your phones and laptops away and keep the television off so you and your Valentine can spend some quality time together. Board games are a fun way to while away a slow evening – Catan and Wingspan are good for people who like strategy and mind games, while Guess Who is a classic that is always good fun. Just stay away from Monopoly – it always ends in tears!
